Full name & Status Hoya elliptica ‘AMZ001’ is the accepted and established name of a unique cultivar: “(Articles 11.4 & 27.5, Brickell et al.)

Classification A sport from a cultivated Hoya elliptica. Hoya with colored foliage of this type belong to the Variegated Group (A Group of cultivars and individual plants with blotches, streaks, or differently colored “zones” published by Cubey et al., 2023, and described by the Hardy Plant Society).

Originator & Nominate Melody Amezquita of Southwest Ranches, Florida, USA.

Legal Rights US Patent # PP 36,350 P2 was granted to the originator who is the inventor and rights holder, on December 31, 2024. Date of application April 23,2024.

Hoya elliptica ‘AMZ001’ was selected over time by Melody Amezquita asexually through cuttings when a stock plant in her family greenhouse developed a center-field chlorophyll deficient branch sport mutation.

Amezquita developed a multitude of propagates, as well as a fully bloomed mother plant. It became clear to the originator that the mutation was unique, as well as stable (see PP 36,350). At that time, in April of 2024, she chose to apply for patent prior to release. The process from the beginning of selection of the cultivar, until time of application, was exactly two years in duration in optimal Florida greenhouse conditions.

Etymology ‘AMZ001’ is an abbreviation of Amezquita. 001 is to signify that it was her first cultivar.

Description & Further Information: US PP# 36,530 P2 contains a full description of the cultivar; and this registration was informed by the patent itself. Authors and Amezquita are credited with all description and photography. Only certain key aspects are recorded here and as with any cultivar which is also a legal variety, the document wherin rights are granted is the standard.

In general shape, habit, and bloom, Hoya elliptica ‘AMZ001’ is alike to the species from which it sported prior to selection. However, the variegated leaves do not allow it to be mistaken for the green variations of the species on the market.

Like most other variegated plants, Amezquita has reported that it is a somewhat slower grower and a bit more sensitive. Foliage: Centrally variegated broadly. Pale yellow-green with the strong yellow green between the outside margin and sometimes along the midvein (average RHS 145A-C), and margined in pale olive green (RHS 137B). Inflorescence: Alike to the parent from which it was selected; white and 5-merous. “Fragrant”, rather early blooming. Habit: Vining

Trade Designation(s) Melody has additionally labeled Hoya elliptica ‘AMZ001’ as ‘AMZ001’ EMMA, a trade designation personal to her which is her Aunt’s name.
