Trade Designations & Trademark: Hoya multiflora SILVER, and Hoya multiflora SPLASH were previously used as selling names by the originators prior to coining the denomination ‘WonderPhil’, and are listed as trade designations in their UPOV and New Zealand case report.
(Silver and splash are commonly used by many around the world as descriptors, irregardless of selection and stability, and for some Hoyas which should potentially be given unique cultivar names.
It is especially important to use the cultivar name for Hoyas which have been named and established as cultivars and equivalent legal varieties. While SILVER and SPLASH are trade designations for ‘WonderPhil’, and there are growers in New Zealand who will have changed their labels by now, these trade designations are not unique to ‘WonderPhil’ even within the varied species of multiflora. Use of a trade designation in lieu of a cultivar name may result in loss of the cultivar in the trade.)
Originator: Philip Bartz developed the cultivar, and both Philip and Maria Cecelia Delvo-Bartz are title holders.
Description: “‘WonderPhil’ is a product of natural variegation from a Hoya multiflora seedpod. Three seedlings out of about 200 seeds had the same unique traits. I multiplied those three using vegetative propagations. We took materials for tissue culturing and those tissue cultured ones all have stable and consistent variegation.” -Philip Bartz

Legal Status: PVR specific to New Zealand assigned to Phillip & Cecilia Bartz January 5th, 2022 and maintained in PLUTO, the registry for the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, and in the online register at the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand where the originators first applied and the name was established.
