Hoya 'Dossy'

Name & Status
Hoya ‘Dossy’ is accepted (Article 27.1). It was first described in 2015 in pdf by C.Noel and has been a well known name since then.

The name was established effective in 2024 with a print description by M.Randal and R.C.Conroy in the Stemma Journal Yearly Review 1 2022-2024 (Brickell et al., 2016, Art. 11, Art.27).

Category Hoya ‘Dossy’ is a selection from among a batch of hand pollinated F1 hybrid seedlings resulting from Hoya nicholsoniae F.Muell. x Hoya incrassata Warb. , wherein Hoya nicholsoniae was the female pod parent and Hoya incrassata was the pollen donor.

Grower, nominant, & Introducer Carol Noel, Aloha Hoya Nursery, (Current location: Kula, Maui; formerly Kea’au, HI).

Etymology “named after my dear friend and wife of Ted Green, Dorothy Green. Dorothy has accompanied Ted and friends on many a collecting adventure and is quick to spot the elusive hoya hiding in the ‘bush’. “- From Noel’s 2015 PDF description.

Description See establishing description. ‘Dossy’ is very much like Hoya incrassata in venation, fragrance, and bloom cycle, but with stress coloration of both leaf and inflorescence contributed from Hoya nicholsoniae. Noted as a frequent and early bloomer. This cultivar demonstrates interesting and complimentary characteristics from each of the two species.

Infloresence pale yellow color in low light, stresses pink to purple (with orange in between), including the pedicels in high light. Visually similar to Hoya nicholsoniae, but lasting 4 days as opposed to 2 which is average for that species.

Standard There are two separate images each representative of Hoya ‘Dossy’ published by Randal,M. & Conroy R.C. August 15th 2024. Hoya ‘Dossy’. New Cultivars. Stemma Journal Yearly Review 2022-2024 (1),7. One is an individual umbel, taken 2016, and the other shows the venation and beginning of stress coloration of a single leaf. The left image of an umbel is here selected as the standard. This will be effective with the publication of this decision.

Background Hoya ‘Dossy’ was released in 2015. Mike Bernardo was one of the early hybridizers in the genus and among the only active in this time period. All seedlings from each cross that Bernardo considered worthy of consideration as prospective cultivars were sent to Noel for further evaluation in her greenhouse where she grew them to bloom stage in Kea’au, Hawaii. They shared opinions regarding which seedlings grew with the most vigor and had distinctive characteristics, and made a list of final choices. Because the pdf sales list in 2015 was also released with a pod number (MB1219) and no standard, material was examined in 2024 in the context of the market and 2015 sales list with the assistance of breeder and growers. A list of names, including Hoya ‘Dossy’ were effectively established.

Other designations: MB1219 is a code which applied to the F1 pod of seedlings and is not synonymous with the cultivar name Hoya ‘Dossy’. Any individual numbered as MB1219 or without ID, would need to be compared to the available materials which refer to Hoya ‘Dossy’.

Distribution Available for sale or in private collections in most countries where Hoya are collected.
